HOW ELEMENTARY CAN THE WEATHER BE?

A good question, and it certainly applies to last week’s golf day when compared to yesterday’s. Last week was brilliant sunshine and excellent golfing conditions, but on rising yesterday and hearing the strength of the wind outside one can only wonder at such a massive difference in the elements, with the odd shower being thrown in for good measure. After watching only four morning groups go past my back fence, with the last of them as usual being the legendary Jim Campbell, Doug Harle, Graeme Danson and birthday boy Mick Sims, I wondered if a raffle was worth trying. Something told me not to squib it, so I ordered the meat trays and set off into the wide blue yonder. Thanks to everyone for making that decision work. The only disappointment was seeing Neil Fredricson win another meat tray, his second in three weeks. Think of the calorie intake, Neil. The other meat tray was won by Harry Porter. Harry probably needs to increase his calorie intake. The Crown Lager six-pack was won by a table of four visitors (ticket name 4+) who quite willingly volunteered to purchase raffle tickets without any approach being made. Nice to see someone different have a win, and to see and hear the members’ applause.

The violent conditions yesterday probably made final scores rather like inflationary golf. Highlight was seeing Derrik Farr’s power driven buggy take off along the sixteenth fairway while Derrik and partners were seeking a lost ball. For a moment or two it looked as if the buggy was going to end up in the lake on the left, but available power and control finally gave out as it dived into the agapanthus bushes, trying to hide. Finally Derrik managed to work out where the absconder was. Nice to hear that Bill Fowler scored a hole in one on the fourth last Wednesday, as did Rob Law. Bill was said to be “over the moon” with delight, and such an occasion probably removed from his memory that bad, bad day when his efforts off the first probably set a record that may never be broken. Congrats, Bill.
