Raffle or just Norm`s Ramblings

Tears were shed, voices raised, and anger raged through the club rooms as it became known that Saturday’s raffle had been cancelled. Why? A wedding reception was to take the place of the crucial part of the afternoon’s usual festive arrangements: the munching of party pies, sausage rolls, bickies and cheese, and that ever-popular finale to the afternoon, the scoffing down of cocktail frankfurts! Plans for novelty items had to be scrubbed after serious negotiations with those involved. The Bandit was to give a short lecture on how to manage your golf handicap. Matt Herrick was going to give a demonstration of shaving his head with his eyes closed. Renato Urlus had been engaged to show how hitting off the tee could be a rapid process. Jim Rogers was going to sing Waltzing Matilda backwards, and Frank Scholtz was going to teach us a few German swear words. The chief raffle organiser was shattered to be informed at 10 a.m. of the change of arrangements. After all, surely it would have been more logical to inform him at 10 a.m. on Tuesday or Wednesday morning so that the usual arrangements of purchasing food and ordering of meat pies, sausage rolls, party pies, bickies, cheese, cocktail frankfurts and MEAT TRAYS could have been forestalled. A word springs to mind: COMMUNICATION!

My wife and I spent a pleasant afternoon sipping bubbly and looking out at happenings up and down the fifth fairway. The most exciting event was watching Tyrrell McGeever with close friend John Gray arrive at the agapanthus patch adjoining my back fence. Tyrrell’s drive had lobbed in that notorious piece of the course. Lo and behold! He walked straight to one side, stuck his hand in, and came out holding the errant ball. This must be some sort of record. I’ve seen semi-professional ball-seekers going through that patch, and giving up after two or three hours. I can tell you, it certainly affected poor old John Gray who played on up to the right-side mounds from there, and then shanked his ball out on to the freeway as he tried to lob it on to the green. That’s golf, they say. As a player off 36 I just couldn’t help having a smile later on when David Ballingall duffed his tee shot 20 metres along the ground. It happens to us all.
